Choosing an Ideal Spouse
In the play, A Doll's House, it is abundantly clear that Nora and Torvald were not the perfect match that they were suspected to be. This was seen when their entire marriage came crumbling down at the finale of the play. So why did their marriage end in shambles? The major reason was that the two had nothing in common and only assumed the positions of happy spouses. The truth was that they were simply using each other, and their marriage turned out to be a social conformity. Nora seemed to be using Torvald for money and comfort, while Torvald used Nora so that he could have someone to control and have power over. Society in the real world needs to realize that an ideal spouse should not be chosen because of their physical beaty or materialistic possessions. Instead, he/she should be chosen by looking at their inner, lasting qualities. An ideal spouse's qualities have to be chosen by the one searching for a spouse, because he/she will be the one spending the rest of his/her life with that person.This generally ensures that a person will live a long, happy life with their spouse and major problems will not be created later in life, as is the case in the play.

Honesty in Marriage
Above all, a major quality that an ideal spouse should have is honesty. If a couple cannot be honest with each other, then they probably should not be together. For example, in A Doll's House, Nora does not tell Torvald the whole truth about her situation with Krogstad, in that she took out a large loan. This, as seen by the ending of the play, leads to a horrible outburst of emotions between the two parties. Nora even tells Torvald, "I'm no wife for you" (Ibsen 113). In present day, a major factor in many marriages is that one or both people are having an affair with another man/woman. These affairs always tend to have negative consequences and in many cases lead to the end of a happy marriage. Again, if you feel that your partner is dishonest and you cannot trust them, you should probably not choose to be with them. But if you still believe that your partner is ideal for you, there are ways of helping your relationship. The video below explains how help can come to you and your spouse.
